Geography and Ocean Science

The School of Geography and Ocean Science (SGOS) of Nanjing University, founded in 1921 by Professor Kezhen Zhu, has a reputation for "the cradle of geographers."

Many famous geographers, such as Professor Kezhen Zhu, Professor Huanyong Hu, Professor Qiyun Zhang, Professor Xudan Li, Professor Meie Ren and Professor Huairen Yang, had been teaching in this department and had cultivated a group of high-quality talents.

The SGOS has played a distinct role in domestic and foreign academic cycles through Professor Zhu Kezhen's research on monsoon climate, Professor Hu Huanyong's proposition on the population density boundary line, and Professor Zhang Qiyun's research on historical geography.

Population Geography Research

In 1935, geographer Hu Huanyong delineated the renowned Aihui-Tengchong Line (commonly known as the Hu Line), which first revealed China's fundamental population distribution pattern of high density in the southeast and low density in the northwest.

This pioneering work demonstrated the crucial relationship between population distribution and environmental carrying capacity, thereby establishing the foundation for population geography studies in China.

Professor Hu Huanyong served as one of the founding scholars of the Department of Geography at National Central University, the predecessor of Nanjing University. Building upon his groundbreaking research, population geography at Nanjing University has been sustained and developed across generations, maintaining its leadership role in advancing this field of study in China.
